48 stitches

I’ve managed to lose my drivers license. So, what has this got to do with 48 stitches you may be wondering. Well, in CA you have to spend quite a bit of time at the DMV in this situation, or in any situation that you need to go to the DMV, well more than 48 stitches, usually more like a inch or 2 on a pair of socks. Quite a bit of time can range anywhere from 30 minutes (even with an appointment) to several hours. The fastest I got out of the DMV in CA was 45 minutes, and that was with an appointment. You schedule an appointment, and hopefully you can get one soon, then you go in and wait, and wait and wait, and knit considerably more than 48 stitches.

When I moved up here, I went into get my DL, and didn’t even have a chance to break out my knitting. Ok, I thought at the time, this is a fluke, it can’t be normal, it’s early, they’ve just opened, it’s the middle of the week etc..etc.. etc.

So when my DL came up missing, I was dreading going back, no such thing as appointments here, you just go in and wait. Well, the wait isn’t bad, the DMV was busy this morning, there were at least 30 other people there (yeah, by CA standards a walk in the park, I’ve seen lines go round the building down there). Ok, so I settled down to wait, figuring I could get some knitting done on a pair of Trekking socks that have been OTN for way way to long, they got bumped for holiday knitting. Pull out my knitting, I knit 2 socks on a magic loop, generally toe up. I got through one side of one sock (30 sts) and thought to myself I should be able to get a few rounds done. But no, a mere 18 sts into the 2nd sock, I hear 307 (that was my number). So a mere 48 stitches later, I’m talking to a lady explaining my situation, last name, B-day, address, she takes my money, and boom I’m taking a picture and I’m out of there. 10 minutes after walking in the front door, I’ve got my little temporary license with a pic in my hand, and I’m walking out the door.

Who spends 48 stitches worth of time waiting for the DMV? While this isn’t CA, it’s not exactly the boonies either, people drive here, people need DL’s. There are fewer people working here, there were 8 stations fully manned. Heck there were a quarter of the chairs in the waiting area, and those were nearly empty. Who has time to sit down in 48 stitches, I barely did. Maybe CA DMV has something to learn from WA DMV.

*sigh* I know. Isn’t it lovely? People looked at me funny when I was knitting. I assumed because I was knitting. Now I believe it was because they thought, “Just how long does she plan to be here?”

Sigh–you’re right, I have waited much much longer at the DMV here in SoCal. And today it’s going to be 90. Can I just say I’m not a happy camper??

Oh sure, make us feel even worse about being in So Cal! ;)

This post cracks me up. It’s like when I visit my mom in Oregon; it takes no time at all, and I’m always freaking out at how much gets done in a day. Definitely better quality of life!
